An interesting discussion is worth comment. I think
that you ought to write more about this issue, it may not be a taboo subject but usually
people do not discuss such subjects. To the next!
Best wishes!!

I was a nurse at Eket in 1961 briefly. We worshiped at a missionary's home at the seminary in Obed Idom.
In 1996 I met Mary and Mercy in Santa Clara CA, they said they were related to Jonathan and Mary said her brother was a doctor at the hospital at Eket. I'm 73 now, cherishing the memories of my experience in Nigeria and grateful to find this history on the internet!
I will continue the search, God bless you and your efforts to keep the history alive.

I have very fond memories of being at Immanuel Lutheran Seminary when Jonathan arrived. Neither of us could go home for the holidays so we spent them together. I was glad to hear that his grandson was becoming a Lutheran minister. I am slow physically but our God has kept my mind alert; in December I was 97. I still plan on sharing stories about your grandfather while we were in the seminary together. Oh we had small classes but in some we were the only two so we had to learn.

When people are Spirit-filled, loving disciples of Christ, the Spirit will guide them to love the people around them, encourage them to seek out an edifying community of believers, and give them a hunger and thirst for righteousness.

The variety of human beings is enormous, and what motivates individuals varies widely as well. Some people are motivated by the promise of rewards in heaven. Others are motivated by duty. Some are motivated by love. Yet others are motivated by the need to prove something.

Jesus said, "Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?" Obedience is what Christ requires, not merely verbal acknowledgments of his Lordship.

The motivation, whether it's the imminent return of Christ or something else, is not important. Different people are motivated by different things they find in the Bible. That's one of the virtues of its being so big.

Are you any relation to the current president, Christian Ekong? My dad is en route to Nigeria for the celebrations as I type this and will be preaching? teaching? at the seminary. I am under the impression that he will be meeting President Ekong. Dad is a good friend with Dave Erber and my dad's congregation has been supporting their work for many years through the TIM program.

Maybe someday the profs will publish their syllabi in Logos format also so that we could always have them in our library and use them after we graduate! I would also hope that some day CPH and CLS would work out an agreement to electronically publish the vast array of theological books in a "Pastor's Collection" that would be starter kit available for new Seminarians.
