The Body of Christ never says GoodBye

September 6, 2013

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. (1 Corinthians 12:12-27 ESV)

As Concordia Seminary gets ready to embark on its 175th academic school year, a reminder came that I hadn’t written my follow up to saying goodbye and what it meant for this fourth year. Let’s face it 4th year was a major struggle for me. I was walking down two paths; one to the parish and one towards further graduate study. As the year went on discernment was necessary to make a decision on which path to walk. In the end, God selected the path for me and this has led me into the parish. (Where I am extremely happy, I might add)

goodbyeOne of the hardest things to do in life is to say goodbye and when it comes to the seminary community that task becomes even harder. For 4 years you are linked into a formation path with 60-70 men and women leading into church work. You grow with these individuals. Their experiences and background shape you and your experiences and background shape them. Both share in each other’s joys and pains. It is an experience like none other in life. Add in the friendships cultivated with families, staff and faculty… and I for one was sad to leave the seminary community.

The text above provided me comfort for many reasons. 1. God is at work no matter where I am and the path He leads me down. 2. Thanks to Christ, I am part of the body. 3. No matter where I am, I am a necessary part of the body. This guides my thinking about communities, friends, and family. Since we are all part of the body of Christ, this means we are always together, unified. We may be in different locations, but are always fulfilling our function in the body according to God’s Will.

Another thought that comes to mind is once a part of a community, always a part of a community. We should always be concerned, show love, and care for the communities we have been a part of. As I look back, I have been a part of numerous communities; church, family, grade school, high school, college (twice), neighborhoods, cities, seminary, and the parish. In each case, just because we move away, we don’t cease to care about those still existing physically in that community. The same can be said about the body of Christ. God calls home His children and even though they have fallen asleep in the Lord, they’re still part of the body of Christ and thus still part of our community.

bodyofchristThe original blog post was called, “the Art of saying Goodbye.” I’ve since learned we aren’t to say goodbye. We are only to say, “until we meet again” or “until our paths cross again” or “cya when Christ returns.” Regardless of status in life or location, we are still part of the body of Christ and because of this there is never any need to say goodbye.

To my brothers and sisters at Concordia Seminary, blessings on the upcoming school year. Please know that you are always in my prayers. May God richly bless your studies and formation, may His Will for you be revealed, and may He protect you from the Evil One all of your days.

Your Brother in Christ,

Rev. Eric Ekong

Pre-Lenten Workshop Offered at Concordia Seminary

December 25, 2012

PRE-LENTEN WORKSHOP OFFERED AT CONCORDIA SEMINARY

November 19, 2012

ST. LOUIS—Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, will offer a one-day pre-Lenten workshop for pastors on Friday, January 18, 2013 called “Good and Perfect Gifts: A Lenten Sermon Series on Isaiah 56–66.”

Each sermon in this series takes up a specific gift from a text in Isaiah 56–66, interprets it through the life and times of Isaiah, and then creatively applies it to Christians as they journey in Lent from the cross to the empty tomb. Workshop participants will not only become more familiar with this oft-neglected section of Isaiah, but they will be equipped and inspired to proclaim God’s good and perfect gifts that flow from our Savior’s bitter suffering and death.

Pastors will gather from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. in the Presidents’ Room on the Seminary campus. Registration cost is $50, including all materials and lunch. A registration form can be found at www.csl.edu under Continuing Education to submit online or print and mail. For questions, call 314-505-7486 or email ce@csl.edu.

Call Day Post by Rev. Schmidt

May 1, 2012

A very fitting blog posts on Call Day from Rev. Schmidt.

Originally posted on Such a time as this - Esther 4:14:

On Wednesday, April 25, 2007, I sat in the Chapel of St. Timothy and St. Titus on the campus of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis and patiently waited to hear the words: Michael Schmidt – Kansas District – Peace Lutheran Church – Natoma, Kansas.

Prior to that moment, I had never been to Kansas, never thought I would live in Kansas, and never even heard of Natoma.  Prior to that moment, I was a typical east coast person who thought Kansas consisted of Kansas City, Wichita, and Topeka, and that was it; but now, I was the newest resident of the state, and I would reside at least 3 hours west of Wichita and Topeka, and 6 hours west of Kansas City.

However, despite what so many say, my experience that night was not typical.  Both the St. Louis and the Fort Wayne seminary will quote ad nausea Isaiah 6:8…

Life Continues: Reflections on Call Day

April 30, 2012

At this point we are a day away from Call Day. The day 2nd, 3rd (deferred), and 4th year seminarians look forward to with anticipation. Don’t be fooled anyone who says, “I haven’t thought about it much.” They are putting on a brave face for you and others. In reality, the months leading up to Call Day can be very draining mentally and spiritually for those receiving assignments, their family and friends, and the church that will welcome them. Where will I go? Will they welcome me? Where will God get this biggest bang out of me? Was I selfish in the areas I thought best enhanced my skill set? Will I get along with my supervisor? What will happen with my family and friends? All of these are questions that have and will continue to run through the minds of seminarians, their families and friends, and their waiting congregation. There is no way to get around it.

Even for those very few who already know where they are are going to be placed, the stress of Call Day doesn’t escape them. The same worries fester within them as well. It becomes harder to concentrate on class work. Your instructors will work to keep you focused on the task at hand. They know more than anyone else, that life continues after you have heard your name called and you have learned you the location of your assignment. Life continues as they are still assignments to be completed, packing to take care of, arrangements to be made, and other life issues to pay attention.

Yes, I assure you Life Continues after you open that white envelope (after the service, not during). Life continues after you have met your supervisor, had dinner with family, and shared with friends. Life continues as the next day you are expected to re-focus on the exam or paper that is due in a couple of days. In fact because Life Continues, you owe it to yourself, your placement location, and future parish down the line that re-focus on what is important, the here and now. The church expects you to be the best of the best. The church is entrusting you with a noble task among its people.

I speak from experience. I am only days away from hitting the 1yr mark when I received my vicarage placement. Life continues with your formation. Rejoice in reaching this milestone of your formation careers. However, realize this is only a step, not the finish line. Let me be the first to congratulate you all on your vicarage placements and 1st Calls. Remember, this is not the finish line. Life Continues…
